The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a

W3 Professorship in Small Animal Internal Medicine

as of October 1st, 2027. Reference is made to § 67 Para. 7 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) and to the conditions of employment based on § 68 HessHG. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.

Duties:

You will head the Small Animal Clinic (internal medicine) and be responsible for representing the full spectrum of the field of small animal internal medicine in research, teaching and clinical services.

Your teaching load is 8 hours per week. Your teaching duties comprise the courses specified for the discipline of small animal internal medicine and propaedeutics in the Veterinary Licensing Ordinance (TAppV) and the study regulations of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. In addition to the compulsory modules stipulated in the TAppV, you will be expected to offer compulsory elective courses in immunology within the context of small animal internal medicine.

Your research will focus on immunology or on metabolic diseases. In doing so, you will collaborate with researchers (m/f/d) both within and outside Europe and demonstrate a commitment to international engagement .

Further success is expected in independent acquisition (and management) of externally funded projects (preferably from the DFG, the BMFTR and/or the EU).

You will be expected to participate in the Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences (GGL). Your willingness to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration both within the faculty and beyond is expected, as is a willingness to initiate and participate in research consortia at Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU). You are also expected to be actively involved in veterinary education, continuing education and professional development.

Your responsibilities will also include the transfer of scientific findings into economic application.

The integration of gender aspects into research and teaching is desirable.

Requirements:

Prerequisites for the position include a completed university degree in veterinary medicine, including a license to practice veterinary medicine, an outstanding doctoral degree in a relevant specialist field, and additional academic achievements in the field of small animal internal medicine (demonstrated, e.g., by a habilitation or in the form of relevant peer-reviewed publications in the research field outlined above). Pedagogical aptitude is also required.

Diplomate status of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine – Companion Animals (ECVIM-CA) or a diploma of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) is required. An additional board certification as a recognized veterinary specialist (m/f/d) in the field of the professorship to be filled is an advantage.

You must have an internationally recognized research profile in the field of small animal internal medicine. In particular, you must demonstrate scientific expertise in the field of small animal endocrinology, as evidenced by relevant publications.

Success in independent acquisition (and management) of externally funded projects (preferably DFG, BMFTR, EU) is required.

In case the candidate exceeds the basic age limit of 50 years, a civil servant appointment under § 66 Para. 3 sentences 2 and 3 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation (HLVO) requires a specific functional interest.
